  1. Largest of South Africa's Bantustans, or
  2. homelands, extending northeast from the Great
  3. Kei River, on the coast of Cape Province, to
  4. the border of Natal; area 43,808 sq km/16,910
  5. sq mi; population (1985) 3,000,000, including
  6. small white and Asian minorities. It became
  7. self-governing 1963, and achieved full
  8. `independence' 1976. Its capital is Umtata,
  9. and it has a port at Mnganzana. It is one of
  10. the two homelands of the Xhosa people (the
  11. other is Ciskei), and products include
  12. livestock, coffee, tea, sugar, maize, and
  13. sorghum. Its government consists of a
  14. president (paramount chief Tutor Nyangelizwe
  15. Vulinolela Ndamase from 1986-) and
  16. single-chamber national assembly.
